Link between Rheumatoid Arthritis and Vaginismus
Hi all,

I am new to the forum and love reading all your posts. Thanks so much for sharing with other women around the world! Very Happy In looking at what may trigger vaginismus, I am very interested in the link between autoimmune diseases, musculo-skeletal conditions, different forms of arthritis and vaginismus. I have had Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) for 24 years (since I was 6 years old) and I had bilateral hip replacement surgery when I was 16 years old. I am now 30 years old and have been living with vaginismus for years, not knowing what it was or being able to find the right support to treat it.

I have muscle spasms and trigger points through my whole body which I assume are linked to the residual affects of the RA. So, it comes as no surprise to me that my vagina muscles seem to operate in the same way as the rest of my body. I think muscle tightness may be linked to the subconscious desire to protect my body from pain when I move.

I am sure that watching my body change and get more "deformed" over time as a result of the RA has taken its toll on my self esteem and feelings of self worth. This, no doubt has meant I've felt asexual at times and less attractive to men which has probably made me feel less inclined to "open up" to men in a sexual way for fear of rejection.

I, like many of you here, are in the process of dilating with support from a  physiotherapist. And, very thankful I have the emotional support of this Network. If you are living with Rheumatoid Arthritis and vaginismus I would love to hear about your experiences!

I do not have RA but my maternal aunt does.  She is about 52 and I think she has been dealing with RA (mostly in terms of getting a diagnosis) for about eight or ten years.  We are not close enough to have discussed my vaginismus so I don't know if she also has vag.

I suffered from severe rheumatic fever as a child so I voted yes.
But  I am not sure how related that is to arthritis but I still have aching fingers from time to time which get swollen and sore.

I dont think there's a relationship between my vag and my rheumatisms
because it mainly affects my fingers but I am guessing, if RA affects your lower body, hips and possibly your pelvic bones too,
it makes sense that vaginismus may be a way to prevent more pain
in that area.

I would trust your intuition.
